The Story

The Coffee

The robust and balanced note of the coffee beans from the Matenda Coffee Farms comes mainly from the Catimore variety, which, together with smaller quantities of the rare but exquisite Geisha variety, reflects the rich culture and natural beauty of the southeast African country. In the in-house roastery in Mzuzu, two employees ensure fresh roasts all year round.

The Story

The Farm

Located 1500 metres above sea level in the picturesque Viphya Highlands, Matenda Coffee Farm was named after the great-grandfather of the Msowoya family, Matenda Msowoya.

The farm is characterized by its sustainable cultivation methods and consistent use of local resources. The impressive location offers ideal conditions for coffee cultivation and enables the Matenda Coffee Farm to produce high-quality coffee characterized by environmentally friendly practices and social commitment.

The Faces behind

Meet Cyrus Msowoya

Cyrus, now 64, founded Matenda Coffee Farms on the family's own land in 2014. Despite the previous failures of his father and great-grandfather (Matenda) in growing coffee, Cyrus firmly believed in the success of this company. He invested a lot of time in research and development, especially in collaboration with his two daughters, to whom he has now handed over the company.

The Faces behind

Meet Lizzie & Tawonga Msowoya

I met the two sisters as a power couple at a farmers market not far from the capital Lilongwe. Lizzie (right) is a doctor, mother of a small daughter and takes care of the business side of the company. Tawonga (left) is a social scientist and is committed to the community and gender equality as a gender and development practitioner.

The Faces behind

The People

In addition to Cyrus and his wife, another 33 people from the area work on the farm. They work in various areas such as harvesting, drying, packaging or plant care. Their shared commitment and connection to the region contribute significantly to the success of the Matenda Coffee Farms. Each individual contributes their skills and knowledge to ensure that coffee production is sustainable and of the highest quality. The close cooperation and the family-like working environment create an atmosphere in which community and progress go hand in hand.
