The Woman with the beautiful Baskets: Sinthani
Sinthani, a 35-year-old mother of two, is the creative founder of Elyn Creations - named after her two daughters Eliana and Eliora. I met the young woman at a farmers market through her truly unique, beautiful and high-quality baskets. In addition to being the founder of her company, Elyn works in the hospital as part of her medical science studies. With her passion for art and the desire to reinterpret traditional basket weaving, she taught herself the technique about 4 years ago via YouTube.
What started as a small idea is now a growing company that produces high-quality, handmade baskets with a lot of dedication and creativity.

The Story
The Craft
Elyn Creates baskets are handcrafted with precision from natural, local materials such as palm leaves (mlaza), reeds, bamboo, cotton threads and muwanga wood. Sinthani uses plant-based powders dissolved in hot water to dye the palm leaves. Each basket takes two to three days to complete.
At her home in Lilongwe, Sinthani herself and her loyal assistant Mpatso play a crucial role in production. Together with her workshop in Blantyre, her team consists of 15 employees - including 7 women and 8 men. In both locations, she ensures that each piece is made with the utmost care and according to her innovative approach.

The Story
The Impact
Since the middle of the year, Sinthani has opened her own permanent shop, which means she is no longer solely dependent on sales through the farmers market. This new opportunity allows her to expand her reach and present her vision of innovative baskets to an even wider audience. In addition, through her two workshops, she creates valuable jobs that not only provide income but also a perspective for her employees. Sinthani's dedication not only inspires her team, but also raises awareness of handmade, sustainable handicrafts from Malawi.
