The Faces behind

The daughter of the founders: Chifuno Stevens

Chifuno, the daughter of Malawian Charity and her British husband Christopher Stevens, now runs the family business together with her mother, which her parents founded in 1987. After international experience in Canada and the UK, she returned to Dedza in 2020 to support her parents' traditional ceramics workshop. With her academic background in chemistry and her global know-how, Chifuno brings fresh impetus and passion to the traditional craft. Together with her mother, she ensures that values such as community, sustainability and quality remain at the heart of Dedza Pottery.

The Story

The Pottery

Dedza Pottery is more than a workshop - it is a vibrant centre for craftsmanship and community. Founded in 1987 by Charity and Christopher Stevens, the pottery has become a symbol of Malawian ceramic art. The use of clay from the Lintipe River region and the dedication of the team make each creation special. Today, Charity and her daughter Chifuno run the traditional workshop together.

Around 30 to 40 craftsmen are directly involved in the production process. From the first clay to the finished product, sustainable and functional ceramics are created here with a lot of love and care, reflecting the values of community and quality.

The Craft

Traditional craftsmanship with modern precision

The craftsmanship at Dedza Pottery combines tradition and innovation. Each piece goes through several careful steps - from shaping to firing to painting - and is fired in one of the four kilns at temperatures of up to 1,250 °C. Using local clay and a great deal of skill, unique pieces are created that harmoniously combine functionality and aesthetics.

The Story
